Hematic Motor Limited was established to manufacture and supply hermetic motors to Kirloskar Brothers hermetically sealed compressor manufacturing plant at Karad, and has completed 25 years of its existence in the year 1999. I thought on this occasion it would not be out of place to review the past years and find out whether the objectives in establishing this company were achieved or not. Kirloskar Brothers Ltd. initially manufactured these compressors at Kirloskarwadi itself and the motors were being procured from "Lawkims" and later from Kirloskar Electric Company, Banglore. The price of 1/6th HP motor procured from both the companies was not according to the universally accepted percentage of cost of motor to cost of compressor (i.e. 30 %). This situation for compressor division was very grave and finally I had a detail discussion with the Kirloskar Electric Co. top management about the dire state of Kirloskar Brothers compressor plant and they finally allowed me to start a Kirloskar Brothers Ltd. controlled ancillary at Karad. We made detailed study of all the operations that were necessary to be followed by visiting G.E. factory at Toledo U.S.A. After completing the detailed study of manufacturing operations and quality checks at Toledo, a project plan with minimum overheads was prepared and Hematic Motors Private Limited was started in 1973-74 at Karad. First the work of Hematic Motors was started in the small rented place in the city of Karad and all employees were women. Initially procuring of raw material like Hermetic grade copper wire etc. of proper quality was a problem. But some good suppliers like Atlas Wires supplied us with proper quality and that to at reasonable market price. I am happy to say that with the help of Kirloskar Brothers Ltd. technically and financially, we successfully delivered the first lot of motors at the desired price.
